Treatment Description

Hair loss is one of the problems that almost all of us face at one point of the time or the other; however few people face this problem at a younger age due to various reasons including the genetic.

Technology has also encroached in this area and has come out with brilliant results. One such technique that medical scientists has come up with are ‘Follicular Unit Extraction’ also known as FUE.

What is FUE?
Follicular Unit Extraction is a technique that restores hair. The method includes the removal of the follicular units with an instrument called ‘trephine’ from the donor area of the patient. The technique has been so evolved and improved that now-a-days the scars are hard to detect, the healing process takes lesser time.

Are there any risks or complications?
Even the risk of complications has reduced now and the minimally invasive surgery standards and techniques are even being followed in hair transplantation. However there may be a case of infection, this is very rare though.

How does the procedure of FUE work?
In the procedure, a small punch is put to use in extraction of follicular units from the bald resistant donor area of the patient. These follicular unit grafts/hair are then transplanted into the balding area of the patient's head. The method usually involves a lot of time and physicians are limited to transplant about 500 to 600 follicular unit grafts in one sitting.

Two procedures for Hair transplantation: There are actually two procedures that are followed for hair transplantation, the FUE and the standard strip excision method. These two procedures are used all over the world by various medics. However, the FUE procedure is less popular as compared to the standard strip procedure. Follicular Unit Extraction involves minimal enveloping procedure yet the standard strip excision method remains the most popular hair transplant procedure. In the standard strip excision method, a strip of scalp is surgically removed from the donor area of the patient and then sutured together, either by stitches or staples. After the surgery these are removed almost after a gap of ten days if dissolvable sutures haven’t been used. However, the popularity of the method doesn’t mean that it has no side effects unlike the FUE method. Where the strip excision method is a little cheaper than the FUE method, it also lets the patient to have larger numbers of grafts/hairs to the balding areas during the surgical session. However, this procedure leaves the person with a scar that takes a longer time to heal. The FUE surgery not only takes a lesser time to heal but even produces number of tiny scars in the donor area which are hard to see.

Does the process hurt?
Most patients don't feel any pain during the procedure. A local anesthesia is given. After the treatment pain killers are given should one feel any pain, it's rarely necessary.

What is the cost of the treatment?
The type of treatment as well as the size of the area that is to be treated determines the cost of treatment. One may go for the FUE procedure, keeping in mind their lifestyle and luxury. However, as such procedures need precision one must consult an experienced physician and let him decide which method is best!
